Italian Ham and salami sandwich

Italian Ham and salami sandwich, a classic Italian sub,  is a great fit for lunchboxes since it tastes better and better as it matures. The sandwich can also be pressed to some extent since added pressure forces the inner layers and ingredients blend better and taste beter. Choice of sauce is yours. 

Italy is a Mecca of sandwiches. Among all other reasons why people come to Italy from all over the world, an opportunity to taste the mouth-watering sandwiches is one. 

Many of the sandwiches are long– made using Ciabatta loaf or other long loaves. The layers are made with salami, mortadella sausage, capicola ham along with provolone or other varieties of cheese.

Italian Ham and salami sandwich: Ingredients 

  • ½ cup of finely chopped fresh oregano.
  • ½ cup of extra virgin oil.
  • 6tbsp of fresh lime juice
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground white or black pepper.
  • 1 large ciabatta loaf.
  • 3 cup of tender lettuce leaves.
  • You need 6oz thinly sliced prosciutto (dry-cured ham).
  • 6oz thinly sliced capocollo (a variety of dry-cured pork)
  • 8oz thinly sliced provolone cheese (in absence, use pasta filata cheese).
  • 1cup of hot pickled peppers

Italian Ham and salami sandwich: Preparation

  • Take a small bowl and mix the oregano, oil, Lime juice, garlic. ½ tbsp of salt and then ¼ tsp of pepper. Cover them and refrigerate for at least 2 hours
  • Cut the ciabatta loaf (if not available, use french loaf) lengthwise. Blend the sauce and put it over the cut sides of the bread and spread it nicely with the help of a knife
  • Then line the bottom half with the lettuce, and then the top with the prosciutto, capocollo and provolone
  • Scatter all the peppers over the cheese and cover the top of ciabatta cut
  • Press together and cut into 6 sandwich pieces; then wrap them with foil papers tightly. Let them sit for a few hours at room temperature to let the flavours meld.
